FC Blades Players Selected for Olympic Development Pool
March 26, 2013
March 26th, 2013 Hot on the heels of 5 players being selected to the 2001 Pro +/Young Olympians Pool, 4 more girls have been selected to the Pro +/2000 Young Olympic Development Pool!! That now makes a total of 8 out of 16 girls from our G00 team selected! Well done to Destinee Manzo, Nicole Zepeda, Lauren Fuchs, and Jenna Nighswonger!! No less than 5 FC Blades players were selected to the Young Olympians Pool (YOP) by Cal South scouts through State and National Cup competitions. FC Blades are making this a good habit as in each of the last 5/6 seasons players have been recognized by Cal South as players with elite talent. With the Olympic Develpment Pool still to be announced there could yet be more accolade for FC Blades! Congratulations to Juliana Lynch, Lilli Rask, Hanna Kim and Lauren Drysdale from the FC Blades G00 team and Daniel Yu from the FC Blades B00 team!!!!!!!!! The Young Olympians Pool is a selection of the top 140 players born in 2001. Players will go to training camps/evaluation sessions and have a chance to compete for a spot in the final 36, which forms two teams to compete in regional competition. Last year our very own Destinee Manzo(Blades G00) enjoyed that experience playing a key role in the 00’s success in the Arizona regional’s. FC Blades GU13 - Beach FC Winter Cup Champs
January 2013
FC Blades Champions of Beach FC’s Winter CupJanuary 27, 2013 - South Torrance High School, Torrance, California FC Blades G99 completed an undefeated run through Beach FC’s Winter Cup tournament earning the championship title in the GU-13 Premier division. Coach Tim Woodcock’s FC Blades team came out on Saturday January 26th firing on all cylinders from the opening whistle against tournament host Beach FC Black. Both teams battled for every inch of the pitch with neither wanting to give ground. During the 17th minute of the first half, Blades Lauren Medow played a short corner to Cassandra Opre. Opre moved the ball to just outside the 18 yard box on the left and took a shot to the far post upper ninety. The well placed shot was well outside of the reach of the Beach keeper giving Blades the early lead 1 - 0 as the half ended. The second half opened with the same intensity on both sides. However, Beach not to be outdone had a shot from nearly the same exact spot and executed in the same manner leveling the match at 1 goal apiece in the 5th minute of the second half. The match continued on and appeared to be headed for a draw. Blades’ Ava Gomez took a ball from Frances Lahr which hit Gomez in stride. Gomez battled pasted the defender with the Beach goalie rushing to slide for the ball. Gomez made a slight touch to the left and shot the ball into the now empty net giving Blades the lead of 2 - 1 at the 26th minute of the second half. The match ended with Blades earning the victory of 2 -1. The same day in the late afternoon, Blades was now pitted against Westside Breakers 99 White. The field was engulfed in fog, but that did little to cloud either teams resolve. Blades kept the ball on the opposing side of the field for the majority of the match peppering all both the goal’s frame and keeper. However, in the 18th minute of the first half, Lauren Medow took a corner kick from the right post and found an unmarked Averee Dubach who adroitly headed in what became the game’s only goal. The 1 - 0 victory took Blades to the top of the group standings. Sunday morning saw Blades pitted against Beach FC North G99. Beach held the second spot and needed a victory to advance to the finals. Blades needed either a tie or a win to move on. With the finals on the line, both teams played with intensity and guile. In the first half at the 10th minute, Blades Alice Shiga passed the ball to Averee Dubach. Dubach took ownership of the middle of the 18 yard box and deftly maneuvered around Beach’s defense and tucked away a goal to the left of the outstretched keeper giving her and her team the early 1 - 0 lead. The second half saw Beach begin with renewed vigor coming out determined to even up the match. However, the Blades defense anchored by keeper Ally Lozano did not wilt under the pressure. Blades instead held strong as in the 20th minute of the second half, Dubach once again found herself in a position to make another goal taking the lead to 2 - 0. Blades ended the match 2 - 0 and earned a spot in the finals. The Sunday finals was a pairing of group winners Beach FC G99 Beach South Bay against FC Blades. Each team was one win away from tournament champions and each wanted to hold the cup. This was seen in the speed of play. Both teams came out trying to impose their will on the other. Blades drew blood first with Averee Dubach continuing her from and putting in a goal in the 10th minute of the first half. The half ended with Blades on top 1 - 0. Beach came out determined to put in an equalizer and did in the 5th minute of the second half. The shot was just out of reach of the Blades keeper, Ally Lozano. The goal evened things up at 1 - 1. The Dubach train had already left the station and Kyra Greenwood found Dubach with an instride pass. Dubach juked the defense and safely tucked in a goal giving Blades the lead and eventually victory of 2 -1. The victory earned Blades the Winter Cup champion’s title in the young 2013 season.

This group never fails to amaze me, their is no other team that has the commaraderie and spirit like these girls. They stay true to our pre match poem ’The Man in the Glass".
