FC BLADES GU11 ARE CAL CUP CHAMPIONS!
The girls endured a tough schedule that spanned three weekends. In the tournament opener, the Blades met South Coast Bayern for an evenly matched game. It was a keeper’s duel to the end with both teams taking multiple shots on goal. Blades keeper, Lexi Neary, showed enormous effort defending her goal against the approaching Bayern team. Daniella Filipovic put in the winning goal with minutes to spare to give the Blades the upper hand. North Irvine Soccer Club was the next opponent to challenge the fired up Blades.  The Blades took an early lead as North Irvine was no match for the beautiful game being played around them. Defenders Janis Jin, Brie Ratkevich, Vickie Chen and Rachel Ilda found themselves with time for additional passes and communication. Goals were posted by many Blades players for a final score Blades 6-North Irvine 1. FC Blades then defeated FC Deportivo LA Strikers 4-0 later that afternoon. Antoinette Bailey posted two goals, JJ Riddle found a errant ball by the back post and Jessica Stevens finished off the game with 1.  Blades defense was strong throughout, Rain delays factored into the final day pushing the Blades to a 3 game Sunday in their quest for the trophy. Blades met the Corona Eagles in the quarter final game. Filipovic put up a perfect corner kick that was knocked in by Claudia Hodgetts early in the game. Bailey rebounded her own shot that was finally knocked in by the opponent. Kaylee Fukumoto found Bailey with a solid mid field cross that finished the game at 3-0. The semi final game against LAFC Chelsea had the Blades running full speed. Alex Tomich showed strength from the side as she fed Roya Leuteritz, Stevens and Bailey crosses that kept the ball on our end. Mid fielders Fukumoto, Filipovic, Hodgetts, Alex Vanous and Smiley moved the ball smoothly keeping the pressure on. Super defender Chen, found Stevens open in front and hit the target to take the lead. Bailey brought the ball across the mid field line alone and took the winning shot. 2-0 Blades. The Blades were headed to the finals. Familiar opponent, South Coast Bayern played aggressively to keep up. Filipovic scored early on a free kick, then Stevens found Bailey poised and ready to strike. Up two at the half, the blades could not let up the intensity, Bayern anwered wth two tieing up the game. Neary was on her game and ready for the challenge! Two five minute overtimes could decide the game prior to tiebreaking PK’s. Bailey made an immediate run at kickoff and scored. Filipovic sealed the win with a beautiful shot launching the FC Blades sideline into victory cheers! Keeper Neary had four shutouts in six games!Coach Tim Woodcock was very proud of the beautiful game as it was play by his FC Blades GU11 team! Congratulations!

The FC BLADES GU11, playing their second tournament as a silver team, won the Notts Forest Cup, on Labor Day weekend, for the second year in a row!

The first game against Fram CQ was a tight competition. The Blades played their game passing well but the Fram team was one step ahead. Fram lead 2-0 at the half but the Blades rejuvenated and came out fierce. Brie Ratkevich put the ball in play for Mima Mirkovic who found Antoinette Bailey in position to strike. The game remained at 2-1 up until the last seconds when Ellie Kim passed to Bailey who passed to Roya Leuteritz, several tackles later with the goalie out of the box, the ball returned to Kim. She took a booming shot toward the open goal and a Fram defender headed the ball in! Moments later the whistle blew and the game was tied 2-2.

The next game against San Diego Surf Black saw lots of action in the net. Jessica Stevens showed her speed on a breakaway and landed her shot to start the game. Lexi Neary defended the goal diving and knocking away any Surf shots. One play had Neary out of the goal and Janice Jin made a heart-stopping save by kicking a sure score out and away! Annie Ng, SG, Ellie Kim and Claudia Hodgetts had more than their share of amazing tackles in the mid and back fields. Gabi Klimon, JJ Riddle, Kaylee Fukumoto and Mirkovic executed fine passing to move the ball into play. Riddle found Bailey who made the shot count. Later Bailey knocked a shot that rebounded off the goalie but Kim and Stevens were there to make sure it went in bringing the score to 3-0. After a trip in the box, G landed a perfect PK and then Leuteritz bounced a shot off the post where Stevens collected it and found the net. Final score Blades 5, Surf 0.

Game three saw intense competition against FC San Diego. Both teams were quick to the ball and it was definitely a keepers’ duel. Fukumoto controlled the midfield while Vickie Chen and Jin protected the backfield and kept Sand Diego out of scoring position as much as possible. Any shots were skillfully defended by Neary. Klimon, Stevens, Riddle and Bailey kept the pressure on up front. Final score 0-0.

In the final game of pool play against Arsenal FC, the Blades found themselves in a must win situation to advance. Arsenal played a physical game against the Blade’s fine passing. Bailey started early, breaking away with her amazing speed to knock in the first goal. Arsenal answered with a goal of their own in the first half. Arsenal roughed up Leuteritz every time she had the ball finally resulting in a penalty. Janice Jin knocked in a solid PK to bring the score to 2-1. Riddle, Stevens and Klimon played aggressive in the mid field finding themselves on the giving and receiving end of numerous fouls. Annie Ng, G, Hodgetts, Chen and Jin had their hands full in the back but kept Arsenal from scoring again. Riddle collected a beautiful cross in the middle ready to take a shot when she was taken down by the defender resulting in another penalty. Riddle handled the PK herself for a final score 3-1 and advancement to the Championship game. Coach Tim Woodcock told the girls that no matter what happened, they should be very proud of themselves. They played amazing soccer all weekend.

The tournament final against Fram CQ was surely a nail biter! The Blades were ready to win back-to-back Championships! The teams were well suited, but the beautiful game favored the Blades skilled passing. Fram couldn’t match the calculated connections or beat the determined Blades to the ball. Brie Ratkevich took control of the ball and traveled while keeping her head up for the open player. She found Bailey who surely landed the first goal. Later Bailey took the ball downfield and found Leuteritz open. She knocked it in left footed for a 2-0 lead. A questionable call gave Fram a free kick that was placed in the top corner of the net out of reach of keeper Neary. Coach Woodcock questioned the official’s call, defended the excellent play of his team. MVP Claudia Hodgetts along with Jin, Ng, Chen and G buckled down and refused the Fram team any chance of bringing the game to a tie. The final whistle couldn’t come soon enough for the Blades fans! Blades GU11 were repeat Champions of the Nott’s Forest Cup! Congratulations Girls!

2009 DBWV Winter Shootout, Diamond Bar

Game 1

In steady rain on Saturday morning, the Blades defeated the Freedom Northstars 3-0. Powerful defense was offered by Vickie Chen, Janis Jin, SG and  Brie Ratkevich.  Outstanding stops by keepers Meghan Siemers and Griffith kept the ball moving to our advantage. Claudia Hodgetts scored two and Roya Leuteritz finished it off with 1 more goal.

Game 2 of the tournament against United FC White allowed the skilled Blades team to use their accurate passing and ball skills to out score the opponent 7-4. Strong midfield support by Gabby Klimon, Claudia Hodgetts, Jessica Stevens, Kaylee Fukumoto, and Ellie Kim allowed JJ Riddle to serve up a hat trick. Additional goals were scored by Jessica Stevens, Janis Jin, and Ellie Kim.

Game 3

In the semi-final game against Chelsea G98, Ellie Kim had a breakaway from midfield and she took a power shot to the corner of the net for the first goal. Janis Jin continued the roll and scored on a free kick. Kim then crossed on target to Riddle who nailed a shot over the goalies head to make it 3-0 at the half. Klimon and Stevens made several additional attacks on goal that were sent back by a strong Chelsea defense. Blades defense fought hard and allowed only 2 goals for a final score 3-2, that moved them to the tournament final.

Game 4 - Final

The final game against the Laverne Lazers was a physical battle. Roya Leuteritz fought hard against swarming defenders to knock in the first goal. Keepers Mima Mirkovic and SG dove and jumped to keep the Lazers out of the net. With a tie score at the half, the Blades had to bring their best effort to the field. Strict defense by Ratkevich, Jin, Chen, and Kim denied the opponents approach. Gabby Klimon, Claudia Hodgetts, JJ Riddle, Kaylee Fukumoto & Jessica Stevens made Coach Tim Woodcock proud by moving the ball well and creating opportunities to take it to the net. Jessica Stevens sealed the win by tapping in a perfectly placed pass by Kim. The Blades took home the Championship trophy with a final score Blades 2 – Lazers 1!
