Oaks Polo Fields Classic
Tournament Champions

FC Blades GU-10 team won the 5th annual Oaks Polo Fields Classic to capture their second tournament title of the summer. In four tournament games, the Blades scored fourteen goals and conceded just one, to Slammers White, who the team defeated 3-1 in the final game.

The Blades opened on Saturday with a 4-0 victory over Corona Eagles Navy, followed by a 3-0 win over Tustin United.

After a sluggish, scoreless first half against Corona, Asuka Nagasawa tucked a corner kick inside the post to put the Blades up 1-0. Jasmine Hollins then intercepted an errant Eagles’ pass and blasted home a shot for a 2-0 advantage. In the play of the game, Iva Petkov’s header off a Nagasawa corner kick made it 3-0 Blades. Precision passing by Lauren Medow and Kelly Cottone set-up a Cassandra Opre goal for the final margin of victory.

Against Tustin United, Averee Dubach and Petkov scored early. Medow scored late and Tustin was unable to mount much of an attack against goalkeeper, Patricia Block and defenders, Cottone, Hollins and Kayla Ebeling in the Blades 3-0 win.

On Sunday, the Blades started fast against Slammers Maroon when Opre found the back of the net after a breakaway for a 1-0 lead. The Slammers had scoring chances late in the first half, all of which were thwarted by Block and the Blades’ defenders. In the second half, the Blades caught fire, getting goals from Medow, Dubach and Opre in a seven minute span to coast to the 4-0 shutout.

In the final against Slammers White the Blades caught an early break when a Slammers shot hit the post. The Blades quickly answered with a Dubach unassisted goal followed by Petkov tapping in an Alice Shiga cross for a 2-0 Blades half-time advantage. In the opening minutes of the second half, Block snuffed a Slammers scoring chance at point blank range. However the Slammers fought back to score off a corner kick, cutting the Blades lead to 2-1. Not to be denied, Medow found Opre with a cross to seal the 3-1 victory and tournament championship.
